📈 Cryptocurrency Highlights
HashKey launches a $500M Digital Asset Treasury Fund
Hong Kong–based exchange HashKey Group has announced it is putting together a Digital Asset Treasury (DAT) fund with an initial target of US$500 million. Reuters
The fund will target mainstream crypto assets, especially from the Bitcoin and Ethereum ecosystems. Reuters
Purpose: to allow institutions and public companies to hold crypto in treasury, taking advantage of favorable regulatory shifts and potential upside in token value. Reuters
Significance: Underscores that institutional adoption continues and that large players are increasingly comfortable with digital assets as part of their financial strategy. It also shows regulation + infrastructure in places like Hong Kong are enabling these moves. Reuters
Sub-Saharan Africa among fastest-growing crypto regions; Nigeria leading
According to a recent Chainalysis report: Chainalysis
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) saw ~52% growth in on-chain transaction value between July 2024 and June 2025 (reaching over US$205 billion) — making it the third-fastest-growing region globally, behind APAC and Latin America.
Within SSA, Nigeria leads by a large margin: over US$92.1 billion in value received. Much of that growth is driven by retail demand and by users hedging inflation or foreign exchange risk.
Bitcoin dominates as a store of value in Nigeria (~89% of purchases), while stablecoins are heavily used for larger cross-border / trade / merchant payments. BeInCrypto
Emerging Meme/L2 tokens gaining traction: “Layer Brett” & others
There’s a lot of buzz around new Layer-2/meme-coin hybrid projects, especially one called Layer Brett (LBRETT).
It’s in presale, combining meme-culture appeal + utility (low transaction fees, scalability).
Compared / contrasted with more established alts like Solana (SOL) and Hyperliquid (HYPE), this kind of token appeals to those looking for high short-term upside. But of course comes with high risk.
There’s also strong interest in other similar “trending” crypto assets: some presales are raising millions, attracting thousands of early backers. Indiatimes
🇳🇬 Nigeria Focus
Blockfest Africa 2025 coming to Lagos
The festival is now scheduled in Lagos (October 11, 2025) and expected to host over 4,000 attendees from Africa and beyond. AMBCrypto
It’s being billed as “Africa’s Web3 Super Bowl”—a gathering to bring together creators, startups, builders, regulators, and investors. AMBCrypto
Key focus areas: workshops, masterclasses, panels, pitches. It’s free (but limited spaces). AMBCrypto
Strong Local Use Cases & Challenges
Crypto usage in Nigeria is being significantly driven by real-world pressures: inflation, FX restrictions, and the search for value preservation or cross-border transfers.
Stablecoins are playing a big role in larger transfers & trade, while small retail uses dominate at the grassroots. Chainalysis
Regulatory environment: there’s ongoing tension; clearer frameworks are needed so innovation can scale without risk. Events like Blockfest Africa also serve as venues to engage with regulators, share best practices, and possibly influence policy.
Pitching Web3: Why founders are avoiding the label “Web3” when engaging with local investors
At ETHSafari 2025 (Nairobi), founders and investors from across Africa discussed how the term “Web3” can sometimes be a barrier when seeking funding locally. Techpoint Africa
The advice: focus on the problem being solved (fintech, agritech, creator economy, etc.), rather than starting with “we are a Web3 company.” The tech (blockchain, tokens, etc.) is often just infrastructure. Techpoint Africa
For Nigeria founders, this suggests refining messaging so that local VCs or angel investors see direct value, not just futuristic tech.
